Supergirl: Craig Gillespie on David Corenswet’s Superman Role in Milly Alcock’s ‘Supergirl’ and Its Impact on His Character Development |
The DC connected universe continues to grow with important crossovers between its characters. After “Supergirl” appeared in David Corenswet’s Superman stand-up film, the Man of Steel returns with a great appearance in Milly Alcock’s “Supergirl”, which opened in theaters this week.Superman’s involvement in ‘Supergirl’ goes beyond simple appearances. Corenswet’s Kal-El opens the film via a video message to his cousin Kara, checking where she is after her birthday celebration. The character also appears in a major sequence that marks Kara’s first arrival on Earth, a moment marked by the language barrier between the two cousins. Kryptonian-speaking Supergirl struggles to communicate with her English-speaking cousin, who grew up in Smallville, Kansas. Additional scenes showing the dynamic between the two characters are woven throughout the story.
Director Craig Gillespie in the role of Superman in this story
Director Craig Gillespie explained the importance of explaining Superman’s presence in the film in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. Instead of seeing Superman as a mere decoration, Gillespie made the character central to Supergirl’s internal conflicts and moral development.Gillespie explained: “It’s like a touchstone that he’s dealing with the values he’s dealing with and his conflicts. “He talks about that a little bit there. In that opening, the conversation was, ‘Do we have a scene together?’ Because we have that later in the film, even chronologically.”
Supergirl’s galactic mission story

Ruthye seeks help in avenging the murder of her family, carried out by a commoner known as Krem of the Yellow Hills.Reluctant to join the mission, Supergirl is spurred into action when Krem kills her dog Krypto, giving her only three days to find and retrieve the drug Krem has.
Milly Alcock’s experience working with David Corenswet
Milly Alcock reflected on her experience working opposite David Corenswet, especially when she started filming when her character had not yet learned English and was getting used to Earth. The first day of filming on ‘Supergirl’ involved Kara crashing in the Arctic and Superman leading her to the Fortress of Sol.“I was in a pod, and I didn’t speak English. I was like, ‘Who is Kara?’ Because the first week I didn’t play Kara when we met her,” Alcock recalled of the filming. “So I was really scared if I could do this.”

They’re adorable.”
