Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Kerala and Karnataka to close schools today amid monsoon rain warning

Monsoon rains force schools to close in several districts, but Delhi and Mumbai remain open

New Delhi: Schools remained closed in several parts of India on July 9 after local governments announced a holiday in response to severe monsoon conditions. With heavy rainfall, waterlogging and landslide risks affecting several areas, authorities ordered closures and made different decisions based on local weather conditions and safety assessments.While educational institutions remain closed in parts of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Kerala and Karnataka, no complete shutdown has been announced in Delhi, Noida, Mumbai or Pune. Officials in those cities confirmed that schools will remain open as planned unless individual institutions issue separate announcements.Areas where schools are closedSome districts have suspended classes at government and private institutions due to weather warnings and adverse ground conditions.

In Uttar Pradesh, authorities ordered the closure of schools in Ghaziabad for all classes up to Class 12. Classroom teaching for students up to class eight has been suspended in Mathura and Hathras.After the India Meteorological Department issued an orange alert, Uttarakhand announced complete closure of all private and government educational institutions, including Anganwadi centres, in Dehradun, Udham Singh Nagar and Nainital.Precautionary shutdown continues in Kerala, KarnatakaKerala has declared a compulsory holiday for schools and colleges in Wayanad, Kozhikode and Malappuram. The decision was prompted by concerns about localized flooding and possible landslides in vulnerable areas.In Karnataka, educational institutions remain closed in parts of Shivamogga district. The authorities have extended the suspension of classes in Hawthorne Nagar and Sagar taluks as heavy rainfall continues.Cities where schools remain openDelhi and Noida are yet to declare a city-wide school holiday despite incessant rains and traffic disruptions. Unless individual schools inform further arrangements, educational institutions will operate according to their normal schedule.In Maharashtra, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and state authorities confirmed that schools in Mumbai and Pune will remain open after the weather alert was downgraded in the region.
