Suniel Shetty has opened up about his relationship with his son-in-law and Indian cricketer KL Rahul, revealing that he first met the batting star as an admirer long ago Rahul and Athiya Shetty fell in love.Speaking in a recent interview with Mid-Day, Suniel reflected on why he didn’t buy an IPL team, despite being a sports fan, and praised Shah Rukh Khan for his vision of investing in the league early on.
Suniel Shetty to meet KL Rahul
Suniel revealed that his first interaction with KL Rahul had nothing to do with family relations.“It was the time of a fanboy. I met him as a fan, before I met him. Until today, that’s how I look at him – a person who speaks very well, soft, humble, and leaves a great influence on young people whenever and wherever he plays,” he said.KL Rahul married Suniel’s daughter, actress Athiya Shetty, in 2023. The couple are now parents to their daughter, Evaarah Vipula.
‘We talk about characters, not jobs’
The actor said he does not interfere with Rahul’s cricket career, just as he avoids giving career advice to his son, actor Ahan Shetty.“I don’t give advice to all my boys.” Like I said, we don’t talk about chores; we talk about behavior. We keep it very simple,” said Suniel.
Suniel Shetty says he could have bought an IPL team
Despite being an avid sports fan and once dreaming of becoming a professional cricketer, Suniel admitted that he stayed away from the Indian Premier League (IPL) when the tournament started in 2008.In retrospect, he believes that if he had been licensed to fundraise, things would have been different.“I could have bought a group. If someone would have helped me, I would probably have joined it. Today, you have donors, VCs and investors who are interested in investing with you. Back then, it was not like that. We could not even think of spending a lot of money,” he said.
Suniel Shetty appreciates Shah Rukh Khan’s vision
Suniel also spoke about Shah Rukh Khan, who bought the Kolkata Knight Riders franchise with Juhi Chawla and Jay Mehta during the inaugural IPL.“Shah Rukh was in the right place at the right time, and with the right people. And I, being a celebrity, was… as I said, Shah Rukh was in the right place,” he said.Calling Shah Rukh a visionary, Suniel added, “I have always believed that Shah Rukh is an absolute visionary.
