India’s Gurindervir Singh has withdrawn from the 2026 Commonwealth Games early after failing to qualify for the men’s 100m semi-finals. The 25-year-old ran 10.39 seconds in the warm-up and finished 28th, with only the top 17 athletes advancing to the next round. Gurindervir arrived in Glasgow hoping to become the first Indian to break the elusive 10-second barrier on the international stage, but he was unable to deliver his best in the moments that mattered most.

A promising start but eclipsed in the final meters

Starting in lane five in the fourth round, the Punjabi sprinter got off to a good start and was alongside Jamaica’s Rohan Watson in the opening stages. However, he struggled in the final 30-35 meters, with Watson taking the lead in 10.13 seconds to win the heat. Although Gurinderville finished second in the heat, his time was not enough to secure a spot in the semifinals. Despite benefiting from a legal 1.5 m/s tailwind, Gurindervir was unable to convert the favorable conditions into a faster time. His time of 10.39 seconds was well below the personal best and national record of 10.09 seconds set at the Federation Cup in Ranchi earlier this year, when he became the first Indian to run sub-10.10 seconds.

Azamati, Saminu lead qualifiers

Ghana’s Benjamin Azamati and Abdul-Rasheed Saminu were the fastest qualifiers, advancing to the semi-finals with times of 10.00 seconds and 10.01 seconds respectively.
