Commonwealth Games 2026 Day 5 live updates: India look to build on Mirabai Chanu’s gold medal win in Glasgow

Commonwealth Games 2026 Day 5 Live Updates: India had its best day at the Commonwealth Games 2026 on Sunday, winning one gold and two silver medals, taking its total medal tally to four. Weightlifting once again proved to be the country’s greatest strength, the boxing team continued to go strong and the men’s swimming relay team reached the Commonwealth Games final again.

Mirabai Chanu came into the limelight as she won her third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal in the women’s 48kg category. The Olympic silver medalist overcame an early missed attempt to finish off another masterclass with a total lift of 190kg. She set a new Commonwealth Games record in the 85kg snatch and then easily defended the title with a 105kg clean and jerk. The victory also earned Chanu her fourth Commonwealth Games medal, further cementing her place among India’s greatest weightlifters.

Rishikanta Singh brought another victory to Indian weightlifting by winning the silver medal in the men’s 60kg category. The Manipuri weightlifter equaled the Commonwealth Games snatch record with 121kg and finished with a total of 264kg. Raja Muthupandi completed India’s medal sweep in weightlifting by winning the silver medal in the men’s 65kg category with a total lift of 286kg, marking his successful return to the Commonwealth Games after missing the last Commonwealth Games due to injury.

The boxing team continues to impress, with Jadumani Singh delivering a dominant performance to beat Pakistan’s Sumama Rehman via unanimous decision to reach the men’s 55kg quarterfinals. In the women’s 54kg category, Preeti Pawar advanced against Malawi’s Deborah Mtenje after the referee stopped her match. Aditya Pratap Yadav was the only Indian boxer to bow out on the day, losing a tight split decision.

India also made progress in the pool events, with the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay team of Srihari Nataraj, Aryan Nehra, Aneesh Gowda and Dhakshan Shashikumar finishing sixth and advancing to the final.

In other disciplines, it’s a tougher outing. The Indian bowls tournament ended after losses in the men’s singles and women’s pairs events, with rhythmic gymnast Tapan Mohanty finishing 15th in the men’s all-around final and the women’s 3×3 wheelchair basketball team losing to Scotland.

Attention now shifts to day five, where India will compete in athletics, boxing, weightlifting, gymnastics, swimming, lawn bowls and wheelchair basketball, with multiple medal chances as the pace of the Games picks up.
