Viswanathan Anand Reversing a previous decision, he will now run in the FIDE vice-president election alongside Timur Turlov, who is running for the organization’s top job. Anand had previously said he wanted to step down from the role to spend more time with his family, but changes in the campaign prompted him to stay in the role. Earlier, Anand explained why he was considering quitting, saying: “I just wanted to spend more time at home. My son will probably go to college in three years and I think I should be here for those years. It’s a lot of motivation to get a different role. But I’m still part of the team.”The change comes after current FIDE president Arkady Dvorkovich was forced to withdraw from the race due to EU sanctions, making it difficult for him to continue in the role.

As a result, Timur Turlov switched from running for vice president to running for president, and Anand joined him as his running mate. Anand is currently serving as interim president of FIDE until elections are held during the Samarkand Chess Olympiad.
Anand supports Turov’s vision
Explaining his decision on “I am proud of what we have achieved as a team, but I also believe we can accomplish much more. That is why I accepted Timur Turov’s invitation to continue as FIDE Vice-President as part of his team.”He also praised Turov’s leadership, saying he believes the businessman has the vision and experience to make FIDE more digital, financially stronger and more inclusive while continuing to grow the sport globally.
