Tamil Nadu School Holidays 2026 Update: Schools and colleges to remain closed on July 28 and August 3
Students in parts of Tamil Nadu will get extra leave in July and August as the district administration has announced holidays for major local festivals. Schools, colleges and government offices in Tenkasi district will remain closed on July 28, 2026 due to the Aadi Thapasu festival at Sankarankovil Sri Sankaraanarayanaswamy temple.In celebration of the Valvil Orivizha celebrations, a holiday has also been declared on August 3, 2026 in Namakkal district. In addition to regular government holidays, district collectors in Tamil Nadu have the power to declare holidays for important local events, including temple festivals, mosque-related events and church celebrations.Sankarankovil Aadi Thapasu holiday on July 28The Tenkasi district administration has declared Tuesday, July 28, 2026, as a local holiday for all state government offices and institutions including schools and colleges to commemorate the Aadi Thapasu festival at the Ami Sankaraanarayanaswamy temple in Sankarankovil.Adita Pasu is one of the major religious celebrations in Sankarankovil, attracting hundreds of thousands of devotees every year. The festival marks the penance (Thapasu) performed by Goddess Gomathi Ambal to witness the emergence of Lord Shiva and Vishnu in the form of a single unified deity Sankaranarayanan.The festival culminates in the Tapasu sighting ceremony and the grand chariot event, where a large number of devotees from different regions gather together. Taking into account the scale of the celebrations and public participation, the district government declared a local holiday.The holiday notice also states that if any government examination is scheduled on July 28, students taking the examination, teachers and officials involved in examination duties will not be entitled to holiday.As a holiday has not yet been declared under the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881, banks will remain open. District finance and lower-level finance will manage urgent government securities-related work with minimum personnel.To make up for the lack of holidays, Tenkasi district collector Ranjeet Singh announced that Saturday, August 1, 2026, will be regarded as a working day in the district.Valvil Orivizha of Namakkal declares holiday on August 3The Namakkal district administration has declared Monday, August 3, 2026 as a local holiday in schools, colleges and government offices due to the Valvil Orivizha celebrations.This annual festival is organized by the government to commemorate King Ori, one of the seven wallalas of Koli Malaikadai who is remembered for his bravery and generosity.To make up for the declared holiday, Saturday, August 8, 2026, has been declared as a working day in Namakkal District.Adiperukul celebrations during the Tamil month of AdiAugust 3 also coincides with Aadi Perukku, also known as Pathinettam Perukku, an important monsoon festival celebrated on the 18th day of the Tamil month of Aadi.The festival is associated with rivers, water resources and the arrival of the monsoon season. People offer prayers, flowers and traditional foods such as Chitrannam to rivers and water bodies seeking agricultural prosperity and family happiness.In Tenkasi district, the monsoon season also attracts tourists to the Courtallam waterfalls. During this period, families and tourists visit the waterfalls while cultural events are organized as part of the seasonal Saral Vizha celebrations.
