Rohtak launches daily 15-minute reading challenge to improve literacy in government schools
Rohtak: In a major initiative to overhaul government school education, the Rohtak district administration has launched two flagship education programs under the leadership of deputy commissioner Sachin Gupta. These initiatives, namely ‘Daily 15 Minutes Reading Challenge’ and ‘Vishwas Programme’, are aimed at improving basic literacy across the district and promoting all-round development of students. The results of the Competency Review Program (CRP) and Digital Skills Passbook were discussed during the monthly review meeting of the School Education Department and Samagra Shiksha. While pupils show positive progress in basic literacy and numeracy, assessment highlights difficulties with reading unseen passages and comprehension. To bridge this gap, all public primary schools have introduced a daily 15-minute reading challenge. After period zero, students will spend fifteen minutes a day reading books of their choice, such as storybooks, biographies, and newspapers, under teacher supervision to develop lifelong reading habits.Meanwhile, the Vishwas program implemented by DIET Madina has been launched in 43 Cluster Resource Centers (CRCs) for students of classes VI to VIII. The program aims to build communication confidence, leadership, learning flexibility and life skills through interactive activities such as role-playing, group discussions and public speaking. Specialized training for cluster leaders and teachers was completed in June and the program is being monitored on a weekly basis. In addition, progress on other key measures was reviewed, including a digital skills passbook that tracks personal competencies related to targeted teaching. The DC also commended 25 schools for the success of Happy Holiday Homework, Maths Olympiad coaching and the Super-40 program for IIT-JEE/NEET aspirants.Besides, the government has also reviewed the Samagra Shiksha infrastructure project and asked for regular inspection of PM POSHAN mid-day meals to ensure high hygiene and nutritional standards. DC Sachin Gupta urged all education workers to work in mission mode to make Rohtak a leading education hub in Haryana.
