Switzerland vs Colombia live score, 0-0, FIFA World Cup Round of 16 2026: Colombia dominate possession early in Vancouver
The final ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup quarter-finals will be decided in Vancouver, with Switzerland taking on Colombia in the final round of 16 at BC Place. The winner will face Argentina or Egypt in the quarter-finals, while the loser’s unbeaten World Cup streak will end.
Both teams remain undefeated in the expansion matches and are in excellent form. Switzerland tops Group B with seven points, starting with a 1-1 draw with Qatar, then beating Bosnia and Herzegovina 3-1 and meeting Canada by the same score. Murat Yakin’s disciplined side then comfortably defeated Algeria 2-0 in the last 32, combining defensive organization with clinical finishing.
Colombia took an equally impressive route. Nestor Lorenzo’s side finished top of Group K with seven points after wins over Uzbekistan and the Democratic Republic of Congo before a goalless draw with Portugal. They secured their spot in Vancouver with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Ghana, with John Arias scoring the decisive goal in Kansas City.
History adds another interesting dimension to the contest. Switzerland and Colombia have only met once before at the FIFA World Cup, with Colombia winning 2-0 in the group stages of the 1994 World Cup in the United States thanks to goals from Herman Gaviria and Harold Lozano. This will be their first elimination game on the world’s biggest stage.
However, the Swiss team was hit by some injury issues before kick-off. The biggest blow is the absence of 20-year-old midfielder John Manzembe, whose three goals and two assists made him one of the tournament’s rising stars before a knee injury ended his season. Ruben Vargas and Djibril Sou are also doubtful, while captain Granit Xhaka, Manuel Akanji and Brel Embolo are all managing muscle overload.
Colombia also suffered a setback when forward Jon Cordoba tore his adductor muscle against Ghana, ruling him out for the remainder of the World Cup. Luis Suarez is expected to lead the attack, with the Colombian camp denying rumors of James Rodriguez’s illness, confirming the veteran playmaker is in good health.
Tactical combat also holds a lot of promise. Jakin’s Swiss side were built on structure, organization and quick transitions, while Lorenzo combined defensive solidity with the creativity of James Rodriguez and the pace of Luis Dias.
Opta’s latest predictions emphasize the balance of the game, with Colombia having a 41.9% chance of winning within regulation time, Switzerland 28.2%, and a 29.9% chance the game will require overtime or penalties.
Both teams are unbeaten, well organized and with the widest margin of victory, Vancouver will host what will be one of the most tactical and engaging knockout games of the tournament.
