McCullum admitted England’s failure to win these major series was the biggest disappointment of his tenure and took full responsibility.“We just didn’t win the big series against India and Australia. I guess all I can say is sorry about that,” he said.He also accepted responsibility for the team’s culture and performance.“I’m the leader of that group. I’m responsible for the team culturally, I’m responsible for the team tactically and I’m responsible for the team in terms of results.“I’ve been in this game for over 20 years and I know if you don’t get results, someone else needs a chance. I put my hands up and admitted it wasn’t good enough.”
An emotional finale with Ben Stokes
McCullum said it was fitting that Ben Stokes would leave the Test match so soon after his exit from the format.He revealed in an interview with the BBC that the former England captain had contacted him after the news broke.“I’ve received some good news from Stokesi,” he said. “Stokes and I go out together, I guess, in a romantic way. We start it together, we go out together, and I don’t have any problem with that.”McCullum and captain Ben Stokes changed the way Test cricket was played in England with their aggressive style, popularly known as “Bazball”.
