Shubman Gill continued his stellar run at Edgbaston with a flowing 80 as India beat England by 6 wickets to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series in the first ODI at Edgbaston on Tuesday.Gill, who had scored scores of 269 and 161 in Test matches in India last year, was victorious at this venue again. His 80 off 75 balls allowed India to control the chase before cramp and a hamstring problem forced him to retire injured just shy of a century.Chasing 259 runs, India lost Rohit Sharma (11) and Virat Kohli (5) early on and fell to 48/2. Gill then rebuilt the innings along with vice-captain Shreyas Iyer, adding 101 runs for the third wicket.Gill was brilliant throughout the innings, hitting 11 fours and a six. He carefully balanced the attack, driving down the wings and wide while pulling Josh Tongue for six. However, physical discomfort interrupted his play, with calf cramps, and then a hamstring problem forced him to retire injured in the 80th game.Soon after Gill’s exit, England found a way back into the competition. Iyer scored 35 but was run out and KL Rahul was then bowled by Tongue. However, Axar Patel and Washington Sundar ensured that there would be no further setbacks. The duo controlled the pace of Jofra Archer and spun the attack well against England spinners to finish the chase with ease. The win was India’s first on the tour of England.Earlier, Joe Root and Liam Dawson rescued England’s batting defeat with a 121-run partnership for the seventh wicket.England started the 13th over with 61 for no loss but slipped to 107 for 6 before Root and Dawson rebuilt the innings. Root scored 76 off 76 balls while Dawson scored a career-best 68 off 83 balls as England scored 258 after electing to bat.Root was in good rhythm, launching the attack after Jasprit Bumrah’s opening spell. He hit six fours and a six, including an angled shot off Bumrah’s bouncer.Bumrah, with 1 for 31 in 9 overs, is India’s most economical bowler. Gurnoor Brar scored 2 for 61 while Prasidh Krishna scored 2 for 50. Axar then smashed the Root-Dawson stand with 4 for 62 to clear the lower order.
