india captain Shubman Gill India retired with a right leg cramp injury as they chased 259 in the first ODI against England at Edgbaston in Birmingham on Tuesday.Gill was batting 80 off 75 balls when he felt unwell in the 26th over. After facing Josh Tongue’s full-on delivery that hit the outside edge, the India skipper took off his gloves, squatted on the field, grabbed the back of his right leg, and decided to walk off the field.The injury occurred shortly after Gill and Shreyas Iyer had completed a 100-run partnership to put India in control of the chase. Washington Sundar came on as a pinch-hitter.England immediately reversed course in the next game. Shreyas Iyer was bowled out after some quick runs and sharp fielding from Harry Brooke.Washington Sundar pushed Jofra Archer’s pass into midfield, prompting Iyer to start running. While running towards the forward end, Iyer changed his route to avoid being hit by the ball, thus wasting precious time. Brooke took a clean catch and hit it straight to the stumps, catching Iyer near the crease.Earlier, Joe Root and Liam Dawson came to the rescue of England with a 121-run stand for the seventh wicket, helping the hosts score 258 runs in the first ODI.England were unbeaten on 61 runs but India collapsed at 107 for 6 in the 22nd over. Root scored 76 off 76 balls while Dawson hit a career-high 68 off 83 deliveries as the duo rebuilt the innings to take England’s total to 258.
