‘Like Messi is to Argentina’: Mohammad Kaif makes strong case for Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli to join 2027 World Cup Cricket News
Amid growing speculation over the ODI futures of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, former India batsman Mohammad Kaif has thrown his weight behind the veteran pair, insisting that their experience will be crucial if India are to challenge for the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. The debate over Rohit and Virat’s place in India’s World Cup plans has intensified in recent weeks, with social media abuzz over reports that one or both senior batsmen could be dropped ahead of the tournament. However, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia recently refuted rumors that the third ODI against England at Lord’s will be Rohit’s last appearance in the tournament.Speaking to Cricbuzz, Kaif said India cannot ignore the experiences of Rohit and Virat, especially given the expected scenario in South Africa.
‘India needs Rohit and Virat in South Africa’
Kaif said the 2027 World Cup will present completely different challenges than previous World Cups, making the involvement of experienced campaigners invaluable.“The 2027 phase will be very important. People are talking about Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma because it will not be an easy World Cup. The conditions will be different, there will be bouncy pitches and India will need these two players. We definitely want them to play as many games as possible from now on and stay in good shape,” Mohammad Kaif said.
Drawing Lionel Messi Comparisons
Kaif compared the importance of Rohit and Virat to football legend Lionel Messi, saying the contribution of experienced players often goes beyond just scoring or scoring goals.“Messi is 39 years old and his team has reached the World Cup final. He did not score in the semi-finals but provided one assist. That is what comes with experience. When you have young players who can get the job done, experienced players know how to guide them and create chances, so just like Messi did for Argentina, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma did for India in the World Cup,” he added. The former India batsman added that the value of experience is the same in all sports.“Be it football or cricket, experience plays a big role. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are considered among the greatest ODI players, so India will 100% need them, especially in South Africa conditions, under captain Shubman Gill,” Kaif concluded.
