India’s Chananbam Rishikanta Singh on Saturday gave the country its first silver medal and second podium finish at the Games by clinching the silver medal in the men’s 60kg weightlifting event at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The 28-year-old from Manipur put in a memorable performance, setting a Commonwealth Games record in the snatch and finishing second in a tight final.
Rishikanta sets new CWG snatch record
Rishikantha got off to a stunning start, successfully lifting 121kg in her third and final snatch attempt to set a new Commonwealth Games record in the event. The effort briefly tied him at the top of the standings with Malaysia’s Mohammad Anik bin Kasdan, setting up a fierce battle in the clean and jerk.

Heading into the second period, the two weightlifters were separated only by number of attempts, with the gold medal match hanging in the balance.
The gold medal slipped in the clean and jerk
Rishikantha successfully lifted 143 kilograms in the clean and jerk competition, but could not improve his overall score after failing to lift 151 kilograms in his last attempt. He finished the competition with a total score of 264kg (121kg in the snatch, 143kg in the clean and jerk), which was good enough for a silver medal.The miss left Malaysian Anik Kasdan in the lead with a total score of 266kg (121+145), with Rishikantha in second place at 264kg (121+143). Kenyan player Mboya rose to third place in the 260 kg category (115+145).
