South African swimmer Chad le Clos made history on Friday when he helped his team win bronze in the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay, becoming the most decorated male athlete in Commonwealth Games history. The medal was his 19th career Commonwealth Games medal, ahead of Australian shooter Phil Adams and England’s Mick Gault.“I shouldn’t cry for the bronze medal, I should cry for the gold medal, but honestly it means the world,” Le Clos, 34, told the Olympics website. With this latest achievement, his Commonwealth medal tally now stands at seven gold, four silver and eight bronze.
A career full of milestones
Le Clos can still continue to improve his own record, as he will also compete in the 50m and 100m butterfly events. He made his first appearance at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in 2010, where he won five medals at just 18 years old. The current version marks his fifth Olympic appearance.As well as the Commonwealth stage, Le Clos has enjoyed a remarkable international career. He won four Olympic medals, including a gold, and 16 world championship titles, mainly in butterfly. The veteran swimmer is also aiming to compete in her fifth Olympics in 2028 when Los Angeles hosts the Games.
