New Delhi: Two-time men’s T20 World Cup champions West Indies could miss out on cricket’s return to the Olympics in 2028 after the qualifying rounds were announced on Monday (June 29). The men’s and women’s T20 tournaments at the Los Angeles Summer Olympics will each feature six teams.In addition to one spot for the four highest-ranking qualifying National Olympic Committees (NOCs) on the continent and host nation the United States, a spot will be determined through the Final Olympic Global Qualifying Tournament (FOCGQT).Based on the rankings as of December 31, 2026, there will be a qualifying tournament in which “the eight top teams that have not yet qualified” will participate.The ICC will organize a West Indies Nations Regional Championship if the West Indies team is currently ranked seventh in the ICC T20I rankings.This competition will determine which National Olympic Committee will participate in FOCGQT. Unlike the International Criminal Court, which recognizes the collection of Caribbean islands as the West Indies, this is not the case with the International Olympic Committee (IOC).Therefore, the IOC recognizes Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, the British Virgin Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago and the United States Virgin Islands as separate NOCs. However, the ICC does not.The National Olympic Committee that wins the FOGQT will receive the final Olympic qualification.Cricket returns to the Olympics after 126 years. The last cricket match was played in Paris in 1900.
