A revered figure in Indian theater and film, Mehta is remembered for his immense contribution to modern Marathi theater and for inspiring generations of singers and filmmakers.Referring to X, the Prime Minister described Vijaya Mehta as one of the most influential figures in Indian culture and cinema, highlighting his pioneering work and dedication to the arts.“Deeply saddened by the death of Smt. Vijaya Mehta Ji. He will be remembered as one of the greatest figures of culture and cinema. A modern pioneer of Marathi theatre, he was known for his talent and dedication to excellence.”He also praised the lasting results of his work and offered condolences to his loved ones and the team of craftsmen.“His work inspired generations of actors, directors and theater lovers. My thoughts are with his family, admirers and the entire artistic community in this sad hour. Om Shanti.”Popularly known as “Bai”, Vijaya Mehta was one of the great architects of modern Indian theatre. As a director, actor and producer, he played an important role in creating an experimental theater community in the country. He was also a founding member of Mumbai’s theater group Rangayan along with Playwright Vijay Tendulkar and actors Arvind Deshpande and Shreeram Lagoo.Over a period of more than six years, Mehta launched Rangayan and directed several popular productions, including Ek Shoonya Bajirao and Ajab Nyay Vartulacha. He also directed popular films like Rao Saheb and Pestonjee.Born Vijaya Jaywant on November 4, 1934, in Baroda, she was trained by renowned theater masters Ebrahim Alkazi and Adi Marzban. His distinguished career has been recognized with several honors, including the Padma Shri in 1986, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Direction in 1975, Tagore Ratna in 2012, and National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress.Apart from her acting career, Vijaya Mehta has also made a splash in Indian television where she has excelled in films such as Kalyug and Party, garnering critical acclaim for her powerful and understated performances.
