Commonwealth Games: Gyaneshwari Yadav wins silver as India clinches fourth weightlifting medal

The Indian weightlifting team added another Commonwealth Games medal on Sunday as Gyaneshwari Yadav bagged silver in the women’s 53kg final.This is India’s fourth weightlifting medal at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Earlier, Mirabai Chanu (women’s 48kg – gold medal), Rishikanta Singh (men’s 60kg – silver medal) and Muthupandy Raja (men’s 65kg – silver medal) had also reached the podium in their respective categories. Powerlifting consists of two events – the snatch and the clean and jerk – and each lifter is allowed three attempts in both events.In the snatch, the athlete lifts the barbell from the ground to overhead in one continuous motion with a wide grip. In the clean and jerk, they first raise the barbell to their shoulders (clean and jerk), pause, and then raise it overhead (clean and jerk), holding it steady until the buzzer sounds.Gyaneshwari lifted 88 kg in the snatch competition and finished second. Nigeria’s Onome Didi leads the way in the 93kg category, while Canada’s Glucks ranks third in the 83kg category.Standings after snatch:

In the clean and jerk, Janeshwari successfully lifted 111 kilograms. However, Didi retained the lead and won the gold medal in the 113 kg category, while the Indian weightlifter bagged the silver medal.The 23-year-old from Bundia village in Chhattisgarh had a total of 199kg (88kg in snatch + 111kg in clean and jerk), but it was Nigeria’s Onome Omolola Didi who stole the show with a staggering 206kg (93kg + 113kg) to rewrite the Commonwealth and Commonwealth Games records to win gold.This is India’s fourth medal in the CWG weightlifting competition and the fifth overall medal for the Indian weightlifting team.
