The title of ‘Kireedam’ was originally planned for Mammootty’s film; Sibi Malayil opens up about Mohanlal’s super movie | Malayalam Movie News
As ‘Kireedam’ returns to the theaters in a restored version 37 years after its original release, director Sibi Malayil has revealed an exciting chapter of the film’s journey. The producer of the film shared that the present title was not intended to be Mohanlal’s masterpiece.Speaking in an interview with Silly Monks, Sibi Malayil recalled how the topic came to Kireedam. He also praised author AK Lohithadas for naming both Kireedam and its sequel Chenkol.
‘Kireedam’ was first offered to produce Mammootty’s film
Sibi Malayil revealed that the idea of ’Kireedam’ was already there before Mohanlal was finalized for the lead role. At that time, Lohithadas was writing scripts for several filmmakers, including IV Sasi.Recalling the incident, Sibi said, “The concept of Kireedam has been with us for a while. When Lohi (Lohithadas) and I were working on the story, we hadn’t even decided that Mohanlal would be in the lead. At that time, Lohi was writing films for several directors. IV Sasi sir was then making a film called Mukthi, starring Mammootty. Once, when Lohi was in Madras working on the film, I went to meet him. He told me about Mukthi. “It was about the collector’s life and the ‘crown of thorns’ he carried in his life.”He went on to say, “Lohi gave the title Kireedam for the film. But IV Sasi sir was not very fond of the title. He told Lohi to come up with something else. When Lohi told me this, I immediately said, ‘That title is ours. Let’s use it for our film.’ Lohi agreed and said that it is relevant to our story. That’s how we ended up using the Kireedam theme. “
How ‘Chenkol’ got his last title
Sibi Malayil also revealed that the sequel was close to having another name before the group settled on ‘Chenkol’. Several options were discussed during the planning process.Sharing the details, he said, “When we started planning the process, several titles were discussed. One of the names we considered was Kanneerpoovu. But it was Lohi who finally came up with the name ‘Chenkol’. He wanted a name that would have a connection with Kireedam. There is a symbolic connection between the crown (Kireedam) and the scepter (Chenkol).‘That idea touched the subject as well.’According to the director, the symbolic connection between the two roles made ‘Chenkol’ a good continuation of Sethumadhavan’s story.‘Kireedam’ turned out to be one of the most memorable collaborations between director Sibi Malayil, writer AK Lohithadas and actor Mohanlal. The sequel, ‘Chenkol’, continued the story and ended much more emotionally than the first part. The restored version of ‘Kireedam’ is now back in the theatres.
