Meet the IIT Delhi graduate who became Microsoft’s scientific director four years after starting his internship
Mukul Singh, a 2022 B.Tech in Computer Science graduate from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, rose from a research intern to the scientific director of Microsoft Research in just four years.Based in Redmond, Washington, Singh currently leads science and technology strategy for Microsoft’s artificial intelligence (AI) platform that powers Microsoft 365. According to his LinkedIn profile, his work focuses on agent AI, base models, model routing, and post-training. He also serves as a technical advisor to the company’s executive leadership on long-term artificial intelligence strategies.
From internship to leadership
Singh joined Microsoft Research in January 2022 while completing his engineering degree Indian Institute of Technology Delhi. After graduating later that year, he was appointed as an associate researcher on the PROSE team, dedicated to improving the developer experience through artificial intelligence.He will be promoted to Research Fellow in June 2024 and Senior Research Fellow in July 2025. In March 2026, he took over as scientific director to lead artificial intelligence research and strategy for Microsoft’s productivity ecosystem.His work has contributed to products such as GitHub Copilot, Excel Copilot, Visual Studio, and Power Query, technologies that reach more than 1 billion users each month.

Before joining Microsoft full-time, Singh worked as a research assistant at CART, IIT Delhi, from December 2020 to December 2021.
