The CBFC finally cleared “Jana Nayagan” with an ‘A’ certificate, ending months of uncertainty over the film’s review. Post the announcement, many users on financial media said that this is a first Vijay movie to get the adult level. However, that is not true. Although ‘Jana Nayagan’ is Vijay’s first ‘A’ certified film in almost 24 years, it is actually the second film in his career to receive this category.

Not ‘Jana Nayagan,”Bhagavathi‘ was Vijay’s first ‘A’-certified film

The first Vijay-starrer to receive an ‘A’ certificate was the 2002 drama Baghavathi, directed by A. Venkatesh. The movie was released more than twenty years ago, it was criticized by the main character because of its behavior and violence. With Jana Nayagan now receiving the same certification, it becomes Vijay’s first film after Baghavathi to be given an ‘A’ certificate by the CBFC.

Director A. Venkatesh had confirmed the censor’s reading

In an earlier interview with Cinema Vikatan, director A. Venkatesh confirmed that Baghavathi has indeed received an ‘A’ certificate. He said, “They gave the film an ‘A’ certificate. Even I was surprised. At that time, the censor board was very strict. Compared to those days, I feel the censor board is more relaxed now.” Explaining the reason, he added: “If a hero hits someone and blood flows, he will not allow it.” Most of my films had action and a bit of glamour, so getting an ‘A’ certificate was common in my films.” His voice also appeared after Jana Nayagan got its license to read.

‘Jana Nayagan’ now joins the short list in Vijay’s career

With the latest certification, ‘Jana Nayagan’ joins ‘Baghavathi’ as one of only two Vijay films to receive an “A” from the CBFC. The H. Vinoth Direction, which is said to have a running time of 183 minutes, is expected to release on July 24 after a long delay. As excitement builds around Vijay’s last announced film, the review also puts to rest the misconception that ‘Jana Nayagan’ is the first ‘A’ certified film of his career.
