A film producer Rajkumar Hirani is making his OTT debut with the cybercrime drama ‘Pritam and Pedro’, and the series has added significance as it marks the debut of his son, Vir Hirani. But unlike the popular star child story, Vir’s path to the role was easy, with his father making it clear that there would be no shortcuts or favourites.
Rajkumar Hirani says that Vir Hirani was not part of the original plan
According to Rajkumar Hirani, his son was not on the radar when the series was first made. The filmmaker explained that he consciously avoids thinking about casting while writing, to protect the creative process. He told Hindustan Times, “When we started writing, Arshad or Vir were not on the radar. When you are writing, you don’t want to think about the cast because you are stuck.”At that time, Vir was completing his studies at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London. Hirani had advised his son to develop his skills before chasing film and serial roles. He added, “I told him to go back to acting school, to acting, and to show himself as an actor doing an interesting job.”
Rajkumar Hirani says Vir Hirani had to practice like everyone else
It was only after Vir saw the conversation at home and in the office that Vir showed interest in the project. But his father quickly implemented the rules. Rajkumar Hirani added, “I told him, ‘If you want to audition, do it. Meet Avinash Arun. Convince him because he’s directing. I can’t force myself. Even if it’s my film, you have to audition. Don’t think you’ll get it just because you’re my son.’”Vir took it seriously, he says he rehearsed the scene every night with a friend, recorded several audition tapes, and sent the best ones to the producers. He got the position because of merit.

Produced, co-written, and produced by Rajkumar Hirani under the direction of Avinash Arun, ‘Pritam and Pedro’ is Rajkumar Hirani’s debut as a filmmaker.In ‘Pritam and Pedro’, Vir plays the role of Pritam, a technology expert, as well Arshad Warsi plays Pedro, an old-school cop reluctantly assigned to a cyber cell. Together, they investigate the abduction of a minister’s son while going up against a cybercriminal played by Vikrant Massey.The series will start on JioHotstar on July 3.
