Rupa Gurunath, daughter of N Srinivasan and whole-time director of Chennai Super Kings Cricket Limited (CSKCL), has been overseeing key decisions. In making the decision to part ways with Fleming, Rupa said: “Throughout nearly the entire journey of this franchise, Stephen Fleming has been a central figure in our coaching department. For nearly two decades, he has helped shape our identity, vision and pursuit of excellence.”“On behalf of everyone at the Super Kings, we express our deepest gratitude for his unwavering commitment, passion and leadership. While our journey together on the field is coming to an end, he will always be an integral part of the franchise’s legacy.”As discussions on all things cricket continue, former India cricketer Hemang Badani, who served as the head coach of Delhi Capitals (DC) for the past two seasons, is in the running to join the CSK squad. DC finished fifth and sixth respectively in the 2025 and 2026 seasons under Badani, narrowly missing out on a playoff spot in his first season.Fleming has been associated with CSK for nearly two decades, first as a player in the inaugural season of the IPL and then as head coach since 2009. He coached Rising Pune Supergiant during the team’s two-year hiatus in 2016 and 2017, leading the team to the 2017 final. Under Fleming’s leadership, CSK reached the finals 11 times, 10 times in the IPL and 1 time in the Champions League, winning 6 titles.However, the past few years have been disappointing. After narrowly missing the playoffs in 2024, CSK finished 10th and 8th in the next two seasons. The team also struggled in Fleming’s other leagues. Joburg Super Kings have made it to the SA20 playoffs in each of the past three seasons but are yet to reach the finals, while Texas Super Kings have also failed to reach the MLC title race. This season, they are in last place with 3 wins and 7 losses in 10 games.The coming weeks could be huge for CSK, with tough decisions expected to be made in terms of trades, coaching staff and even captaincy as the franchise looks to return to its past glory.
