Ashwin Varde calls Paresh Rawal’s ‘OMG 2’ statement ‘BASELLESS’, says the actor’s attempt to make a film without Akshay Kumar ‘incongruous’ | Hindi Movie News
The controversy surrounding ‘OMG 2’ has taken a turn for the worse after the developer Ashwin Varde he replied Paresh RawalRecent statements. After a few days, the former player said that the idea behind Akshay Kumar-starrer was his and that he was denied his credit, Varde has issued a detailed statement, denying the allegations and saying that Rawal tried to make the film without Akshay Kumar’s involvement.
Producer refutes Paresh Rawal’s claims
In an interview with Pinkvilla, Ashwin Varde called Paresh Rawal’s claims “shocking” and “baseless,” saying he was forced to tell his side of the story. “The accusations made by Paresh Rawal in the recent podcast about ‘OMG 2’ are shocking, untrue and without evidence. These accusations leave me with no choice but to expose the history. I want to share my plan of the journey of ‘OMG 2’, as it happened,” said Varde.
How the script reached Ashwin Varde
The producer revealed that it was actor Pavan Malhotra who introduced him to the writer-director Amit Rai. Although they initially met to discuss a project, Amit later shared a story that referred to Varde as ‘OMG’. According to Varde, Amit revealed that Paresh Rawal had inspired him to write the script in a narrative style similar to ‘OMG’.“As soon as I heard this, what I immediately did was that the story matches the look of ‘OMG’ completely. Then, Amit told me that he wrote in ‘OMG’ because Paresh Rawal asked him to be as close to ‘OMG’ as possible according to the story,” he recalled.Ashwin said that Amit Rai had initially raised concerns about intellectual property rights related to ‘OMG’, but Paresh Rawal reportedly assured him that there was nothing to worry about. The producer also said that the actor wants to go ahead without involving Akshay Kumar, despite the fact that the franchise is very close to him.“That’s when it became clear to me what Paresh was trying to do. He was trying to make ‘OMG’ under a different name, which is illegal and useless. It was trying to steal someone else’s creations and his property, and use them secretly. To me, this is not theft,” said Varde.
Why some actors are said to have rejected the film
Regarding Paresh Rawal’s claim that several actors turned down the job, Varde said there was a reason why they turned it down.“Paresh says in his podcast that he approached several actors with this script and they all turned him down. He forgot to mention why they all turned him down. They did it because they all told him, this is ‘OMG’ and it’s Akshay Kumar’s film. Why should we step in something that belongs to him? Or go and get his approval, they all said,” he said.Ashwin added that his production house has finally acquired Amit Rai’s script, which is still registered in the name of the filmmaker.
Paresh Rawal was approached for the role, says Varde
Despite the disagreement, Varde said Paresh Rawal remained the first choice for the pivotal role in ‘OMG 2’. He revealed that several meetings were held with the actor, including talks at the Willingdon Club, Mangii Ferra and Soho House in Mumbai. According to Varde, he told Rawal that the script will be shown for the first time to Akshay Kumar because it is very similar to ‘OMG’.“I told him that I have to take this script to Akshay Kumar first because it’s like ‘OMG’ and it wouldn’t be right if I didn’t. I was surprised when I saw what he did. He kept on repeating that the film cannot be ‘OMG’ without giving any reason,” he said.Varde said that eventually it came to light that Rawal did not want Akshay Kumar to join the project. The producer also rejected Paresh Rawal’s claim that he deserves credit. According to Varde, Amit Rai is still the sole writer of ‘OMG 2’, and Rawal’s intervention was only to act. He said that the actor was offered the film, exchanged the contract, and was also paid according to the contract.“Throughout this journey, I would reiterate that Paresh’s involvement with the film was as an actor and nothing else,” Varde said.
Ashwin Varde’s final answer
Concluding his speech, the producer insisted that no one tried to rob Paresh Rawal of credit or recognition. “I want to reiterate that no one tried to cheat Paresh Rawal for anything. The only thing we are responsible for is stopping him from doing the same,” Varde said.
