New Delhi: India’s top-ranked Anahat Singh on Saturday created history by becoming the first Indian to win the World Junior Squash Championship. The 18-year-old defeated Egypt’s Ruqaya Salem 11-3, 11-7, 11-9 in the women’s final in Ontario on Saturday.“It means the world. I still feel like I’m in a dream,” Anahart said after his win. “I have been losing in semi-finals and quarter-finals for the past four years. If anyone asks me, I always say, ‘This game is a curse’ and I have never played well in this tournament,” the Delhi player said.Anahat said winning the title in her last junior competition made the achievement even more special.“This is my last year (as a junior) and my only chance to win a championship.

Squash Racquet Federation of India (SRFI) general secretary Cyrus Poncha described Anahat’s victory as a milestone for Indian squash.“This is a historic moment for Indian squash. Anahat has the potential to reach very high levels,” Poncha said.He also recalled the vision of late SRFI patron N. Ramachandran.“(The late) Mr. N Ramachandran, the patron of SRFI and the visionary of the Squash Academy of India, always said that his dream was for India to produce a world champion in individual events,” Poncha continued.“We achieved that in doubles, but to replicate that success in singles, it’s truly a dream come true. Of course, Anahat has put in a lot of hard work and effort, but we have an entire country supporting her and her success over the past few years.”
