‘The Odyssey’: Christopher Nolan used technical support to reduce the running time |
Christopher Nolan‘s ‘The Odyssey’ would have gone over three hours if it wasn’t for the technical limitations the director chose to pioneer with this film. The Greek epic, which is due to be released in theaters on July 17, 2026, has an official running time of two hours and 52 minutes, but Nolan initially felt that the adaptation would be longer.According to Letterboxd, the director could not extend the running time beyond about 165 minutes due to the difficulties of the large cameras used throughout the film. The restrictions are based on the 70mm film format, which cannot pass the time without a complete overhaul of the world’s projection systems.
A technical limitation of IMAX
At the request of the outlet, Nolan took to the auditorium to show the big-screen artist what was left of it. “For many years I challenged him to enlarge the plate or to come up with a press to stop the film when it got a little bigger than the plate,” said Nolan, showing his efforts to overcome the problems of technology over time.

Any way to go beyond the current limit would involve reconfiguring all the display devices, which would not be universally applicable. Instead, Nolan accepted the ban and ended it accordingly.
The workaround is the theater editor
Although Nolan kept his Greek voice under the three-hour mark for the main show, he was able to exceed the time limit through non-major elements, allowing him to include additional elements beyond the running time limit. The director also revealed that he deleted a lot of footage during editing, explaining that the choice of scenes made the final episode “a big problem.“
Historical achievements and milestones
Despite its short running time, ‘The Odyssey’ represents several major debuts and breakthroughs for popular filmmakers. The production marks the first time Nolan has shot an entire film on a large-format camera, fulfilling a long-held ambition. In addition, it was revealed that the Oscar-winning director received his first film score credit, adding another dimension to his artistic contributions beyond directing and producing.
