Former Romanian midfielder Gabriel Muresan drowned at the age of 44 in a lake near Apod, where he was mayor, the Associated Press reported. Muresan became mayor in 2020 and is remembered for his football career and service to the local community. The Romanian Football Federation confirmed the death of the former midfielder, who represented Romania nine times in World Cup and European Championship qualifiers between 2007 and 2011.“The Romanian Football Federation extends its most sincere condolences to Gabriel Muresan’s family, friends and everyone who knew him,” the statement said.The Apod local government also paid tribute, calling Muresan a “loyal servant of our community” and recognizing his contribution as mayor.Muresan spent the best period of his career in Cluj, helping the club win three Romanian League titles in 2008, 2010 and 2012. In six seasons with the club, Cluj also won the domestic cup three times.He also gained valuable experience uefa champions leagueparticipated in three group matches against top European clubs including Chelsea, Manchester United and Rome.
