Kia India previews upcoming electric and hybrid models: worth looking forward to

Kia India has released a new teaser on its social media channels hinting at the launch of two new electric models for the Indian market. The short video flashes the words “HEV” (hybrid electric vehicle) and “BEV” (battery electric vehicle) and is captioned, “The future is knocking on the door. A clue. There’s more than one possibility. While the company has yet to reveal the identity of the upcoming model, the teaser suggests both hybrid and fully electric vehicles are in the pipeline.Based on recent spy photos and Kia’s product plans, this battery electric vehicle (BEV) is widely expected to be the upcoming Syros EV. The electric SUV has been tested on Indian roads several times, suggesting that its launch could be around the corner. The Syros EV is expected to retain the overall design of its petrol-powered counterpart. However, it is likely to feature EV-specific styling elements such as redesigned front and rear bumpers, aerodynamic alloy wheels and unique exterior color options.Inside, the electric SUV is expected to borrow most of its equipment from the standard Syros. Kia is also expected to introduce EV-specific graphics and software, but technical details of the electric powertrain have not yet been disclosed.The “HEV” in the teaser is believed to refer to the Kia Sorento Hybrid, another model that was recently spotted testing in India. If launched, the Sorento will be Kia India’s flagship ICE SUV, ranking higher than the Seltos in the company’s lineup.It is expected to rival the likes of Skoda Kodiaq, Volkswagen Talon, Jeep Meridian and even Toyota Fortuner in terms of pricing.The Sorento is likely to be available in six- and seven-seat layouts. Expected features include a panoramic sunroof, Bose premium sound system, ventilated seats, multi-zone climate control and a comprehensive Level 2 ADAS suite.As for powertrains, the Sorento is most likely to feature a self-charging hybrid unit. Kia could also evaluate a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version for the Indian market.
