'This is a T20 batsman': Sanjay Manjrekar backs Shubman Gill's comeback after Ireland's drubbing

India suffered a 2-0 defeat to Ireland in the T20I series, which was also the first time that the Indian team lost to Ireland in a bilateral T20I series. After dominating the IPL’s batting-friendly surfaces, India’s young batting force struggled to adjust to Ireland’s friendly conditions as the hosts defeated them in both matches. The result also marked Gautam Gambhir’s second series defeat during his tenure as head coach.Former India batsman Sanjay Manjrekar believes the defeat exposed the flaws in India’s line-up and not just their execution. He feels that India have become over-reliant on batting all-rounders and now desperately need a specialist middle-order batsman, and he also cited why Shubman Gill should make a comeback in the T20I setup. During the post-match discussion with broadcasters, Manjrekar further explained that Indian batsmen have to develop techniques to succeed on pitches that help the bowlers instead of just relying on the flat batting trajectory they are used to at home and in the IPL. He sees Shubman Gill as the ideal example of a batsman who can thrive in such conditions and backed the India ODI captain’s eventual return to the T20I squad.“Shubman Gill… just so people understand, this guy is now a T20 batsman and has done well in the IPL as well. I’m not talking about the captaincy, but these are the players that you slowly want to reintroduce in T20 cricket because they have more depth in such conditions and are also used to it, like we have seen while playing in England and overseas,” Manjrekar said.“That’s the path forward for Shubman Gill. It won’t happen immediately but I think you will slowly start seeing him in India’s T20 programme,” he added.India will get a chance to bounce back quickly when they begin their five-match T20I series against England on July 1 as the team looks to put a disappointing tour of Ireland behind them.
