World Cup rowing gold medalist fails doping test

Pune: In a major embarrassment for Indian rowing, especially the Army Rowing Node (ARN), World Cup gold medalist Lakshwe has been provisionally suspended after testing positive for drugs outside competition. Lakshay, who won the lightweight double sculls gold medal with Ujjwal Singh at the third World Cup in Switzerland last month, tested positive for Stanozolol in samples collected in Pune on May 25. The victory was India’s first gold medal at the Rowing World Cup. If an anti-doping violation is confirmed, the results will be voided. The development has also dealt a blow to India’s preparations for this year’s Asian Games, where the Lakshay-Ujjwal combination is considered a medal favorite. The 23-year-old Havildar from Haryana won the lightweight double sculls gold alongside Ajay Tyagi at the Asian Championships in Vietnam last year and was also part of the silver-medal winning quadruple sculls team.
