New Delhi: International Chess Federation (FIDE) president Arkady Dvorkovich has resigned from his post after being included in the latest EU sanctions list linked to Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. This decision means that FIDE Vice President and former world champion Viswanathan Anand Will serve as interim president until sanctions are lifted or overturned.In a statement released by FIDE, Dvorkovich called the sanctions unfair and confirmed he would challenge them through legal channels. However, he said his decision to temporarily suspend his duties was to ensure the smooth functioning of the global governing body.“Today, the EU’s decision to include my name on the Sanctions List No. 21 was announced. I want to make it clear that I consider this decision to be illegal and unfair, and that this decision will immediately be challenged by all possible means. I am confident that justice will prevail,” FIDE’s statement read.He added that remaining in office during the sanctions period could affect FIDE’s day-to-day operations.“However, given that these sanctions may hinder the stable functioning of FIDE pending a formal ruling by the courts and/or such rulings being annulled or modified, I have therefore decided to voluntarily suspend the exercise of the powers and duties of FIDE President with immediate effect for as long as I remain sanctioned by EU and Swiss laws and regulations.”In accordance with Article 19.2 of the FIDE Statutes, Anand will now take over as interim President. The FIDE Council formally accepts Dvorkovich’s decision and confirms that he will not exercise any presidential powers or control over FIDE or its assets while the sanctions remain in force.
AICF welcomes Anand in new role
The move was welcomed by All India Chess Federation (AICF) president Nitin Narang, who expressed confidence in Anand’s leadership.He wrote on“Mr. Vichy has earned the respect of the global chess community through his integrity, intelligence and lifelong service to the game. I am confident that under his leadership, FIDE will continue to uphold stability, good governance and commitment to players and international federations around the world.”The EU’s 21st round of sanctions targets 170 entities and 48 individuals, with measures including possible asset freezes and travel bans. Despite the change in leadership, FIDE said its events, tournaments and social programs will continue without interruption.
Indian Chess Olympiad Lineup announced
Meanwhile, India has also announced its lineup for the FIDE Chess Olympiad to be held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan from September 17 to 27. The defending champion Indian team will be led by defending world champion D Gukesh along with R Praggnanandhaa, Arjun Erigaisi, Nihal Sarin and Vidit Gujrathi in the open category, while the women’s team will be led by Koneru Humpy along with R Vaishali, Divya Deshmukh, Vantika Agrawal and Savitha Shri B.
