Famous Tamil music composer and poet Vairamuthu has received the 60th Jnanpith Award in the year 2025 at a grand ceremony held in the national capital. Awarded by former Union minister Karan Singh, the country’s highest literary honor recognizes Vairamuthu’s contribution to Indian literature. Speaking to the media after the ceremony, the singer gave a powerful message of gratitude to the Tamil people while also sharing a calm and measured response to the criticism of his nomination.
Vairamuthu gives respect to every Tamil
Speaking to the media after receiving the award in New Delhi, Vairamuthu expressed his gratitude, saying that this honor belongs to all Tamil people. As Nakkheeran said, he said, “Jnanpith is the highest honor in Indian literature. It can be considered as the Nobel Prize of Indian literature. After 24 years, this award is back in Tamil. I give this respect to every Tamil. Every Tamil should celebrate this as a reward for their home. Parents and teachers should promote the importance of this award and the wealth of Tamil to the youth. “His heartfelt words quickly went viral on social media, with many praising his respect for the Tamil language.
Vairamuthu expresses his faith
Vairamuthu also said that this recognition should not be considered as the end of Tamil literature. He said, “Tamil greatness is not complete with Jnanpith, nor does it end with this award. This is just a continuation of a long journey. Tamil people must continue to share their wisdom, civilization, culture, and life with the world from generation to generation.” His speech expressed his conviction that Tamil literature has remained upright and will continue to grow regardless of any accolades.
Vairamuthu responds to criticism with a measured message
Responding to the criticism surrounding the award, Vairamuthu chose to respond calmly. He said: “If there is no critic, it is not really a reward. It is necessary to accept criticism. Whether it is good or bad should not be decided by the creator but by the readers.”With seven National Film Awards and a Sahitya Akademi win under his belt, Vairamuthu’s recognition in Jnanpith is a historic achievement in modern Tamil poetry on the national stage.
