Pakistan coach resigns days before West Indies, England Test tour Cricket News
Pakistan fielding coach Sean McDermott has resigned ahead of the team’s upcoming tours to the West Indies and England, ending his tenure after about a year in the role.McDermott will not be participating in either tour with the team, news agency PTI reported, citing sources.The PCB is expected to appoint Mansoor Amjad as his replacement. Amjad has served as fielding coach for Pakistan Shaheens and U-19 teams.“Mansoor Amjad, who has been the fielding coach of Pakistan’s Shaheens and under-19 teams, is likely to replace McDermott,” PTI quoted sources as saying.Pakistan are scheduled to tour the West Indies for a two-Test series on Monday before traveling to England for a three-Test series.The PCB has not given any reason for McDermott’s resignation. His exit is the latest in a series of foreign coaches to leave Pakistan cricket without official explanation.In recent years, coach and physiotherapist Cliffe Deacon has departed, and former head coaches Gary Kirsten and Jason Gillespie have also resigned.McDermott will join Pakistan in 2025, succeeding Mohammad Masroor as the national team’s fielding coach. His first assignment will be Pakistan’s three-match T20I series in Bangladesh in July 2025.Before joining Pakistan, McDermott served as assistant fielding coach in Bangladesh for three years and held a similar role in Sri Lanka for a further three years.Over the past few years, Pakistan cricket has seen the emergence of several foreign coaches, trainers and physios. One of the most high-profile exits occurred in 2019, when Steve Rixon resigned over disagreements with the board.The Pakistan men’s team has also had several fielding coaches since Mickey Arthur first took over as head coach, when improving fitness and fielding became a major part of the team’s approach.
