As participation in online learning continues to grow across the country, IIT Madras honors 1,842 South Indian NPTEL stars

New Delhi: Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras honored 1,842 NPTEL stars from South India at a ceremony held at its campus on July 10, 2026. This recognition recognizes learners who have successfully completed and earned certification in multiple courses offered by the National Program for Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL), one of the largest massive open online course (MOOC) programs in the world.In the January-April 2026 semester, the number of registrations on the NPTEL-SWAYAM platform was 3.68 million, and 10,763 learners across the country have received NPTEL Star recognition. Among them, 8,011 learners received this honor for the first time. The number of recognized learners in the Southern District is 1,842.Recognition of continuous learningThe NPTEL Star is awarded to learners who complete multiple NPTEL courses in one semester and become certified. Depending on the number of certified courses, learners will be recognized in the categories of Believer, Subject Star, Super Star and Super Star.A total of 973 online courses will be offered in the January to April 2026 semester, covering engineering, science, management, humanities and interdisciplinary subjects. Around 1.26 million learners have also signed up to take proctored exams in more than 200 cities.

Professor Prathap Haridoss, Dean (Academic Programs), IIT Madras, said at the event, “NPTEL’s true success lies not just in its millions of enrollments, but in the way it changes people’s lives. From its inception, NPTEL has been committed to making IIT quality education accessible to everyone, and today it ranks among the largest MOOC programs in the world.Learners share their experiencesThe event attracted the participation of several learners whose academic and professional journeys have been shaped through NPTEL.These include three-time NPTEL superstar and NPTEL pre-doctoral fellow Gokulapriya C, who completed 23 NPTEL courses before getting admission in the PhD program in Marketing at IIT Roorkee.She said: “I hope every woman who hopes to return to the workplace after marriage can hear this: As long as we are determined, we can achieve anything at any stage.”B. Satyaramamanohar A, Head of Department, Bhimavaram College of Engineering and Technology and NPTEL SPOC, has completed 49 NPTEL courses and received 19 stars. “There are many online courses, but NPTEL is different because it is more structured and has good regular videos and assignments,” he said.Scholarships and GATE Scheme The program also highlights the NPTEL Pre-Doctoral Fellowship, which enables outstanding learners to pursue research projects with IIT faculty while receiving financial support.Another initiative showcased is the NPTEL-GATE portal which provides free resources including live lectures, mock exams and previous year question papers. According to IIT Madras, several top-performing GATE candidates, including Biotechnology AIR 1 Arnab Paul, used the platform during their preparations.
