New Delhi: India’s women’s doubles pair of Rupa Rani Tirkey and Pinki Singh continued their unbeaten run at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, edging out Tonga in a nail-biting decider on Saturday to move a step closer to the lawn bowls semi-finals.The experienced pair are both part of India’s historic women’s quad, which won gold at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. The two sides tied in the opening two sets of Group B and defeated Tonga’s Paris Baker and Milika Nathan 2-0 in the decider. With this win, India made it three consecutive wins in the women’s doubles event and firmly sealed their spot in the semi-finals.

India recover from early setback but remain composed
Tonga got off to a bright start, taking the lead after the opening period, with Paris Baker’s brilliant performance putting India under pressure from the start.However, Rupa responded brilliantly in the second half with a brilliant second goal and skipper Pinky Singh expertly organized the play as India leveled the score at 1-1.The momentum soon turned in India’s favour, and the two worked effectively together for the rest of the match to seal the first set 5-2.The second set proved more challenging. Baker and captain Milika Nathan dominated the early exchanges, taking a commanding 6-0 advantage after three sets.Rupa and Pinky tried to recover late but were unable to erase the deficit and Tonga won the set 6-4, forcing the match into a decisive tiebreaker.When the pressure was at its highest, the Indian combination delivered. Rupa gave India an early advantage before Pinky finished the job calmly to seal another crucial win and maintain India’s unbeaten run.In lawn bowls, the ringleader is responsible for opening each end and placing the bowl as close to the socket as possible, while the ringleader (usually the most experienced player on the team) is responsible for strategizing and delivering the final bowl at each end.

However, it was a disappointing day for India.Dhakshan Shashikumar and Aryan Nehra failed to qualify for the men’s 400m freestyle final outside the qualifying round at Tollcross Swimming Centre.Shashikumar finished 15th among the 27 swimmers with a time of 3 minutes 58.09 seconds. In the third race, he briefly climbed to seventh place midway through, but gradually fell off in the final stages.Nehra swam in the fourth round with a time of 4:00.26 and was in last place throughout the meet, finishing 16th.
