“Jhandu Kumar put in an outstanding performance to start India’s medal tally by winning bronze in the #CWG2026 men’s weightlifting competition! Congratulations to him. His achievement is a powerful reflection of immense strength, unwavering determination and years of disciplined hard work. By overcoming every challenge and excelling on the global stage, he made the entire country proud and inspired countless Indians,” he wrote.
Jandu became India’s first medal at the Glasgow Olympics by winning the bronze with a best effort of 190 kg, scoring 130.9 points.
The Indian weightlifter started the competition with a lift of 181 kg and scored 124.7 points. He then raised the weight to 190kg on his second attempt, a lift that briefly vaulted him to the top of the leaderboard.
In order to compete for the gold medal, Jandu chose 196 kilograms in his last attempt, which will exceed the record set at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games. However, he failed to complete the lift and only received a bronze medal.
The podium finish also earned India its first para-weightlifting medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
Earlier in the day, Ashok came within a whisker of a medal in the men’s lightweight final. He set a personal best in the 200kg, finishing fourth and scoring 143.8 points. Paramjeet Kumar finished seventh in the same competition with a best lift of 176 kg.
India also had three women fighting in the war. Jaspreet Kaur successfully lifted 100 kg and finished sixth in the women’s lightweight category, while Suman Devi also succeeded and finished seventh. In the women’s heavyweight category, Kasthuri Rajamani failed to record a valid lift after failing in three attempts.
