GATE 2027 dates set: IIT Madras announces exam schedule, introduces robotics paper and revised syllabus
Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras officially announces the schedule of the project Engineering Graduate Aptitude Test (GATE) 2027. The exam will be held over six days in February next year, while the online application process is expected to begin in mid-August.GATE 2027 introduced a revised syllabus after five years, a new paper on Robotics and Automation, and stricter verification measures through DigiLocker integration and face authentication, changes that reflect the changing needs of higher education and industry.
GATE 2027 will be held over six days
According to IIT Madras, GATE 2027 will be held on February 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21, 2027, with the exams scheduled in the morning and afternoon.IIT Madras organizes the examination on behalf of the National Coordination Council-GATE under the Ministry of Education. GATE is jointly conducted by the Indian Institutes of Technology and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc). The exam was launched in 1983 and this year is the 45th.Nearly 1 million candidates take the test each year, making it one of the nation’s largest computer-based entrance exams for graduate and technical occupations.
Registration is expected to begin in mid-August
The online registration window is expected to open in mid-August 2026. Once the application process begins, candidates will be able to apply through the official GATE 2027 portal.This year, IIT Madras also made another key decision during the application process. These apps will connect to DigiLocker and facial recognition. This decision was taken to ensure that identity verification is foolproof and that there is no delay in entering the examination centre.
The syllabus is revised for the first time in five years
The most significant change in GATE 2027 is the revised syllabus for all question papers. This is the statement from IIT Madras.It will impact the aspirants in such a way that due to the introduction of new topics and omission of old topics from the previous syllabus, candidates will have to change their preparation strategy for those subjects which will have a different syllabus.
Robotics has its own GATE paper
Recognizing the growing importance of automation and smart systems, GATE 2027 will launch a dedicated Robotics and Automation (RA) paper.This increase reflects the growing demand for robotics, manufacturing automation, artificial intelligence and smart technology professionals. It also signals how engineering education is adapting to emerging fields that promise to drive future innovation.Another notable change is that Textile Engineering and Fiber Science (TF) papers have now been converted into divisional papers under Engineering Sciences (XE).Despite these changes, the exam will still offer 30 papers, with candidates able to choose one or two papers from an approved combination.
Who is eligible to apply?
Eligibility criteria remain unchanged. Candidates who have completed their bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Science, Commerce or Arts or are pursuing the final year of their bachelor’s degree can apply for GATE 2027.There is no upper or lower age limit for taking the exam. As per the revised eligibility rules introduced earlier, third-year BTech students are also eligible to participate, giving students a chance to get GATE scores before graduation.
Exam pattern remains unchanged
The exam will be conducted in computer-based test (CBT) mode and last three hours.Each paper contains 65 questions and is worth a total of 100 points.The marking scheme remains unchanged:
- General ability: 15 points (compulsory for all candidates)
- Engineering Mathematics: Most engineering papers are scored at 13 points
- Negative marks are only applicable for Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs)
- Multiple Choice (MSQ) and Numeric Answer Type (NAT) questions will not be negatively marked
Examinations will continue to be conducted in English only.
