The No. 10 jersey worn by Brazilian star Pelé in the 1958 FIFA World Cup final has sold for $4.9 million, auction house Sotheby’s said on Thursday.Pele, who died in 2022 at the age of 17, scored twice in Brazil’s 5-2 win over host Sweden in the World Cup final at La Sonda Stadium. He remains the youngest player to score in a World Cup final.The jersey is now the second most expensive football jersey ever sold at auction, according to Sotheby’s. The most expensive is still Diego MaradonaThe famous “Hand of God” jersey was sold in 2022 for $9.3 million.The auction house also said the previous most valuable Pele memorabilia was a 1958 trading card, which sold last month for $976,000.After Brazil won the 1958 World Cup, Edson Arantes do Nascimento (better known as Pele) gave the handmade jersey to his roommate and fellow Brazilian Dida.The shirt remained in the hands of Dida’s family for decades before being put on display in a Brazilian museum. It was later acquired by a collector in 2004.Pele remains the only player to win three World Cup titles, lifting the trophy with Brazil in 1958, 1962 and 1970.He scored six goals in the 1958 World Cup, including two in the final against Sweden, helping Brazil win the World Cup 5-2.In the 1962 World Cup, Pele scored a goal to help Brazil defeat Czechoslovakia 3-1 in the final and defend the championship.In the 1970 World Cup, he scored the first goal in Brazil’s 4-1 victory over Italy in the final and played a key role in Brazil’s victory. Pele finished that tournament with four goals.The Brazilian football legend died of cancer in 2022 at the age of 82.
