IPL coaches dominate England Test coaching shortlist, search for Brendan McCullum’s successor Cricket News
England’s search for new Test coach shows clear changes intense pulsed light After Brendan McCullum was fired, several of the world’s most accomplished coaches emerged as leading contenders to replace him.Former England coach and current Royal Challengers Bangalore head coach Andy Flower leads the nine-member shortlist, which also includes former Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming, Lucknow Supergiants’ Justin Langer and Tom Moody, underscoring the ECB’s preference for experienced coaches with a proven track record in international and franchise cricket.According to the Daily Mail, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is aiming to name McCullum’s successor before the first Test against Pakistan at Headingley on August 19, although officials are prepared to take longer if necessary to find a suitable candidate before next year’s Ashes.
IPL experience dominates ECB thinking
Flower, who coached England between 2009 and 2014, is believed to be the first choice, although his work with RCB and hundreds in the IPL could cause some trouble. The 58-year-old coach is said to be weighing up the pressure of returning to one of the most high-profile coaching jobs in international cricket.Former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming has re-emerged as a serious contender after ending a remarkable 18-year association with CSK. Fleming had turned down an invitation to England before McCullum was appointed in 2022 due to his long-term commitment to the IPL, but his arrival reignited the ECB’s interest.Former Australian coach Justin Langer, who currently plays for Lucknow Supergiants, is another high-profile name in the shortlist. Langer had been considered during previous recruitment processes but is believed to be no longer interested after leading Australia to an Ashes victory. His disciplined coaching style is now seen as a potential antidote to England’s recent woes.Lucknow Supergiants global director of cricket Tom Moody, Rajasthan Royals head coach and director of cricket Kumar Sangakkara and former RCB director Mike Hesson are also among the overseas candidates. Hesson, who is currently serving as Pakistan’s white-ball team coach, has reportedly raised eyebrows despite being committed to the international game.
Only two British candidates advanced
Despite the ECB’s emphasis on finding the best coach, regardless of nationality, only two former England internationals have made the shortlist.Former England number three Jonathan Trott has enhanced his reputation with a successful coaching spell in Afghanistan, leading the team to the semi-finals of the 2024 T20 World Cup. Trott has openly expressed his ambition to coach England.Former England spinner Richard Dawson is another domestic contender who has impressed in guiding Glamorgan back to the first tier of the County Championship. Also on the shortlist is former Ireland and Hampshire coach Adi Birrell, while India great Rahul Dravid and England Lions coach Andrew Flintoff have reportedly not been included in the final list. The ECB have begun contacting candidates but with England having lost seven of their last nine Tests, the board is prioritizing a permanent appointment to be able to rebuild the squad ahead of the Ashes, even if that means appointing an interim coach for the Pakistan series – possibly assistant coach Marcus Trescothick.
